Careers in Biotechnology

“There is unspeakable yet entirely preventable suffering in this world. And the probable solution lies in Biotechnology.”

The history of this amazingly scientific combination of biology with technology dates back several thousand years ago with people discovering the usefulness of one-celled organism including yeast and bacteria.

What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is the combination of theoretical and practical scientific aptitude with demanding skills like biological sciences and problem-solving. This interdisciplinary field includes mathematics, chemistry, engineering, physics and also a combination of various other technologies.

It is amongst one of the most progressive and beneficial scientific advances of the last quarter-century. Which deals in creating a new product or modifies the existing ones according to the changing requirements. With genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology and cell biology- as theoretical and chemical engineering, information technology and robotics as practical aptitudes, biotech finds its application across various industries from food, pharmaceutical, chemical, bio-products, textiles, medicine, nutrition to environmental conservation and animal sciences. Thus, with numerous applications in this field, a career in biotech is one of the fastest-growing with ample opportunities for skilled professionals.

It is an arena spanning over agricultural, industrial, and medical fields. With such wide aspects classification becomes somewhat

important, some practitioners classify this area based on colour. For instance, blue biotechnology, white biotechnology where blue biotechnology refers to the use and study of marine-based essential compounds and white refers to industrial applications.

The fact which makes it an expanding and ever-evolving field is that it is a combination of engineering technologies with biological sciences to regulate biological systems. This also plays a lead in bringing in a plethora of career opportunities. Today it is a reliable field in terms of usage and opportunities with its expands in industrial development, research and administrative sectors.

Biotechnology is about innovating and enriching lives through science.

Are you eligible?

A candidate with a qualification -10+2 science stream is eligible to pursue a course in biotechnology can apply for B.Sc/B.tech(Biotechnology) or an integrated M.Sc/M. Tech(Biotechnology).

Candidate with undergraduate degree from a 10+2+3 system in: Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary & Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Technology, Engineering, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant Course); OR Medicine (MBBS) OR BDS Is eligible to apply for the MSc(Biotechnology) as well.

Further for interest in research doctorate courses have good options.

What Can You Do with a Biotechnology Degree?

Biotechnology goes beyond biology and chemistry and hence the scope of career in it. As biotechnology has applications in many industries, giving us a choice to work for a various organization which includes private companies, government agencies, regulatory bodies, or clinical laboratories. Employers in different industries ranging in size from start-ups to world-class pharmaceuticals, from funded organisations to National institutes.

With the increase in quality and customized demands of institutes and individuals like personalized medicine, gene therapy, waste control and also with extraordinary developments around the world the, biotech professionals get a chance to have an impact around the world.

Some high demand biotechnology careers are :

Biomedical Engineer - Biochemist - Medical Scientist - Biological/Clinical Technician - Process Development Scientist - Microbiologist - Biomanufacturing Specialists - Business Development Manager

For a great career, a great thing to remember is: - “Always find a course that gives you hands-on opportunities. This will inculcate the habit of taking responsibility and will help you when you work in a real-world. In real scenarios, the work is about ownership and results with continuous learning and improvements.”

In-depth career details: -

Biomedical Engineer: - Solutions in biology and medicine are

designed by combining engineering and biological expertise where the goal is to improve the quality and effectiveness of biomedical equipment, devices , software, healthcare etc. The expected growth by 2026 is 10%.

Biochemist: - It involves the study the chemical properties of biological processes, such as cell development, growth, heredity etc. They work with research projects which involves isolating, analysing and synthesizing DNA, carbs and other molecules.

Another important aspect about this role is linked with research on hormones, nutrients etc. Expected growth by 2026 is 14%.

Medical Scientist :- They conduct research to find ways to improve human health by researching about preventive methods. They also test and develop medical tests to analyse medical samples foe knowing the cause of disease. Expected career growth by 2026 is 16%. - Biological/Clinical

Technician: -
They collect samples, perform tests, and analyse results of body fluids, tissue, bacteria cultures, and other substances with the use of advanced robotics, lab instruments and specialised computer softwares for modelling data. Expected career growth by 2026 is 18%.

Microbiologists :- Study about viruses and bacterias to produce industrial products by conducting diagnosis and experiments. Expected career growth by 2026 is 10%.

Process Development Scientist :-They are involved in manufacturing process in an organization’s lab and they try to find out ways to make it effective and efficient. They study methods to increase the production with the required standardized protocols. Expected career growth in 2026 is 15%.

Biomanufacturing Specialists :- They use tools and methods to make sure products meet the requirements of safety and quality throughout the manufacturing process. These specialists should possess knowledge of federal, state, and industry regulatory standards.

Prepare for a Career in the Biotech Industry Potential roles can be played in the industry, so do not limit the based on your first few experiences. - Scientific expertise is just 15% of the hiring equation rest lies with soft skills.

Professional network is crucial for success in any career. Build meaningful connections as 85 percent of all jobs are filled through networking.  Be prepared for the ever evolving industry, be adaptable.  Biotechnologists should be unbiased and rely only on the evidence and test results to make recommendations. Success in this career can be ensured by involvement in experiments while studying rather than solely relying on theories and building strong analytical skills as the dynamic industry demands critical analysis for every action due to the wide impact it can have.
